Evolution of rattling particles in deviatoric shear deformation of granular material

چکیده

Granular material such as clean sand in geotechnical engineering is characterized by structured internal deformation pattern and some interesting particle arrangement patterns. This study focuses on the evolution of fraction rattling particles deviator until critical state. Numerical simulations using discrete element method reveal presence (with zero or only one contact with neighbouring particles) even a very dense packing system. The results show that initial depends sample density size distribution. With increase strain, number volume fractions gradually approach steady state from either loose starting point. An effective void ratio, which calculated treating voids, can be viewed new parameter describing sands. Besides, behaviour strongly

Shear Deformation in Granular Material

An investigation into the properties of granular materials is undertaken via numerical simulation. These simulations highlight that frictional contact, a defining characteristic of dry granular materials, and interfacial debonding, an expected deformation mode in plastic bonded explosives, must be properly modeled. Frictional contact and debonding algorithms have been implemented into FLIP, a p...

Evolution of shear zones in granular materials.

The evolution of wide shear zones or shear bands was investigated experimentally and numerically for quasistatic dry granular flows in split bottom shear cells. We compare the behavior of materials consisting of beads, irregular grains, such as sand, and elongated particles. Shearing an initially random sample, the zone width was found to significantly decrease in the first stage of the process...

Hydrodynamic instabilities in shear flows of dry cohesive granular particles.

We extend the dynamic van der Waals model introduced by A. Onuki [Phys. Rev. Lett., 2005, 94, 054501] to the description of cohesive granular flows under a plane shear to study their hydrodynamic instabilities. By numerically solving the dynamic van der Waals model, we observed various heterogeneous structures of density fields in steady states, where the viscous heating is balanced with the en...

Deformation of elastic particles in viscous shear flow

Submitted for the DFD08 Meeting of The American Physical Society Deformation of Elastic Particles in Viscous Shear Flow TONG GAO, HOWARD HU, University of Pennsylvania — The dynamics of two dimensional elastic particles in a Newtonian viscous shear flow is studied numerically. A constitutive equation is constructed for an incompressible “Neo-Hookean” elastic solid where the extra stress tensor ...

Shear-induced alignment and dynamics of elongated granular particles.

The alignment, ordering, and rotation of elongated granular particles was studied in shear flow. The time evolution of the orientation of a large number of particles was monitored in laboratory experiments by particle tracking using optical imaging and x-ray computed tomography. The experiments were complemented by discrete element simulations. The particles develop an orientational order. In t...
